FAQ's

What sort of curtain pole do I need?

The choice of curtain pole will depend on a number of things – personal preference, weight of curtains, type of window, and choice of fabric.

The diameter and colour of the curtain pole is mainly personal preference although wider diameters can be more suitable for heavier fabrics.

Texture – choosing between Metal Curtain Poles or Wood Poles will also depend on personal preference and what visual look  is preferred.

How do I measure to see what size curtain pole I need?

Whenever possible it is always a good idea to allow some wall space to park the curtain on and to allow light into the room by minimising the amount of curtain parked within the window.

Measure the inside recess width of the window. Add at least 15cm ( 6” ) each side i.e. 30cm ( 12” ) in total . If the overall total falls between the sizes available in the product you choose, you will need to purchase the larger size e.g. if your measurement totals 195cm (approx 77”) you will need to purchase the next size which may be 200cm or 240cm.

Can I cut my curtain pole to size at home?

YES - Pre-packed curtain poles can be easily trimmed to size at home using a hacksaw. To trim a curtain pole supplied in two pieces (e.g. 300cm poles are comprised of 2 x 150cm pole lengths with a joining piece) you need to cut each piece by the same amount i.e. if you need to shorten from 300cm to 290cm (10cm) you would need to shorten each half by 5cm so that the join stays in the middle and sits in the centre bracket.

Bay Window Poles – how do I choose the right one?

Colour & diameter will depend largely on personal preference – see What sort of curtain pole do I need?  above.   If Eyelet Curtains are proposed in a bay see Eyelet Curtain Poles below.

The conventional three brackets on bay window poles will not be satisfactory because there will not be enough support for the corners. We do not recommend using a pole with only three brackets in a bay.

There are three different systems for Bay Window Poles to hang curtains in a bay.

1. Bay Window Poles that have a pre-notched section which can be bent to a maximum of 90 degrees. These will be supplied with 5 brackets – two are positioned at each end near the finials as this helps stabilise the corner but does not eliminate any movement.

2. Bay Window Poles that use elbow joiners to connect the poles at the bends.

            Increasingly this type is coming with brackets positioned near the corner/ 
            bend called a “pass over” bracket. C Rings are used to pass over the
            supporting pass over bracket.                                                                                                                                                    

3. Bay Window Poles that use elbow joiners for the corners/bends but do not

have pass over brackets & C rings. Instead they use additional brackets near the finial as referred to above in point no.1

Eyelet Curtain Poles – Can I use any curtain pole?

The mainstream eyelet used in curtains has an opening diameter of 38mm-40mm. Almost any standard pole up from 16mm up to a maximum diameter of 32mm with up to three brackets can be used for eyelet curtains.

The weight of the curtains is a factor to consider as mentioned above.

Curtain poles which include rings can also be used for eyelet curtains as the rings can just be discarded..

Eyelet Curtain Poles specifically come without rings.
